It was a brilliant week!
Tuesday
Kauto Star was the star of the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, but this year the quality of the racing was the best for years. Tuesday saw the Irish horses storm ahead with Go Native and Forpaddytheplasterer winning the opening two races. Then we saw one of the best rides for years as Witcheta Lineman ridden by Tony McCoy flew home to win a thriller. Binocular was red hot favourite for the Champion Hurdle but had to settle for third as stable mate Punjabi won with Celestial Halo second. Garde Champetre won the corss country and Quevega landed a sizable Irish gamble in the last, the first of Ruby Walsh’s wins. Ruby Walsh was to finish leading rider at the 2009 festival.

Wednesday
The irish had dominated the first day and were off the mark in the second race with Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh striking with Mikael D’haguenet. They then teamed up to take the RSA chase aboard Cooldine. The feature of the day was the Queen Mother Champion Chase where Master Minded started the 4-11 favourite and won easily to take a second Champion Chase in as many years. This was an awesome performance and completed a three timer on the day for Ruby Walsh. It was Paul Nicholls’ first win of the meeting. The Fred Winter went to Silk affair and the champion bumper was won in great style by Dunguib, who looks a very nice horse.

Master Minded lands second Champion Chase
Thursday
There were two good things on the day supposedly but neither won. It was a day for the bookmakers. The opener went the way of Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls with Chapoturgeon with Ruby Walsh not riding this as Timmy Murphy is retained by owner David Johnson. Kayf Aramis was a 16-1 winner of the next before Voy Por Ustedes went off odds on for the Ryan Air Chase. He was beaten by Imperial Commander of Nigel Twiston-Davis’ with Paddy Brennan aboard. Kasbah Bliss went off similarly short for the World Hurdle but was disappointing. Big Bucks won for Nicholls and Walsh with Punchestowns for Nicky Henderson in second. Something Wells and Character Building won the last two races.
Friday
This was the best day by far with history being made. Kauto Star regained the Gold Cup, the first horse ever to lose it and win it back. It was a majestic performance and one that will live long in the memory.
The day started with The Triumph Hurdle which was won by Zaynar. Nicky Henderson is to hurdles what Paul Nicholls is to chases. He won the Champion and the Triumph Hurdles with Barry Geraghty on board both horses. Nicholls and Walsh won teh next with American Trilogy then had to settle for second as Weapons Amnesty won the Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle. The last two races on the card went to Cappa Bleu and Andytown.
It was a great week. The two performances of the week were Master Minded and Kauto Star, both owned by Clive Smith. He probably enjoyed the 2009 Cheltenham Festival more than most.
