Cheltenham Festival 2013 Friday 15 March.

1-30 JCB Triumph Hurdle (Juvenile Grade 1) (4-yo) 2013

carl-harrisOne of my favourite races of the Festival, usually unearths a high class horse for the future and it has traditionally paid to follow Nicky Henderson in this. Some interesting stats;

· Last time out winners are 11 from 15,
· Prominent runners have won 9 of the last 15
· 11 of the 15 had a run in the last 42 days
· 10 of the 15 could be found in the first four in the betting.
· 7 of the 15 raced in a Class 1 race last time out from just 93 runners
· CAUTION: Horses returning after a break of more than 42 days have only won 2 of the last 15 renewals from 89
· Held up runners have won 3 from 15 from 163 runners

I did read one preview saying that four year olds had a 100% record in this race! This is a very good renewal of the Triumph. I have a short list of TWO exceptional contenders; ROLLING STAR and OUR CONNOR. Bristish v Irish. There is very little between them according to my ratings with the marginal preference being for the Nicky Henderson trained ROLLING STAR. We last saw him at Cheltenham beating Irish Saint and he looked mightily impressive. He went down as the Triumph Hurdle horse and I still think he is the best. Our Connor is respected and the smart bet is to Dutch them both. But preference is for Rolling Star at 4/1.

MAX BET WIN ROLLING STAR 4/1 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

2-05 Vincent O Brien County Handicap Hurdle

This is a minefield of a handicap, with 28 runners and if you find the winner of this you will be richly rewarded. Sounds easy, it is nothing of the sort! My tentative bet here is an each way (small stakes only) on RANJAAN for Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh who have had a contrasting Festivals so far. This is somewhat speculative as I think the horse will appreciate the better ground. We have had heavy going most of the season and the better ground combined with a favourable mark could give us a decent run.

RANJAAN EW 16/1 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

2-40 Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle

Only eight running’s of this race to day so little can be learned from the statistical trends;

· All 8 winners raced in a Class 1 race last time out, that’s from just 60 runners
· The top 5 in the betting have won 7 of the 8 renewals.
· 7 of the 8 winners were 1st or 2nd last time out.

That’s not really of much help! I have three in the ratings that are on the short list;

· AT FISHERS CROSS- 100
· BALLYCASSEY- 96
· AFRICAN GOLD 92

The form of AT FISHERS CROSS could hardly look any better. Beating The New One last time out and he is my firm bet here. FRICAN GOLD also has had his form franked at Sandown on Saturday and at 13/2 is a great bet each way.

AT FISHERS CROSS WIN 11/4 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

AFRICAN GOLD EW 13/2 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

3-20 Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase

This is the blue riband of National Hunt Racing. The Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup. It has been won by some greats down the years and in recent times they include DENMAN and KAUTO STAR. Imperial Commander is now out and the sad demise of Synchronised, last year’s winner, means the only previous winner in this field is Long Run. This is the most wide open Gold Cup seen for sometime.

TRENDS- POSTIVES:

· 13 of the winners in the last 15 renewals had a previous run at a past Festival, which is 9% better than expected and 10 winners had either won or placed in a past Festival race from 103 runners, that’s 7% better than expected. Neither of those are massively strong statistics since past festival form horses are over bet, but it can’t be ignored when narrowing the field.
· 8 of the last 15 ran in a Grade 1 race last time out from just 51 runners, which is 49% better than expected.
· Irish Breds have won 12 of the 15, 34% better than expected.
· If we add in Grade 2 last time out then 13 of the 15 ran in a Grade 1 or 2 last time out, 30% more than expected.
· 12 of the last 15 were in the top 3 in the betting.
· 10 of the last 15 ran at exactly 3 miles last time out
· Horses winning last time out won 8 of the last 15 renewals.

A field of 11 horses contest the 2013 Gold Cup, competitive but there is no one stand out horse, all have questions to answer. These are the horses I see as the main players.

BOBS WORTH, cky Henderson thinks a huge amount about Bob’s Worth. Bred by his jockey Barry Geraghty it would be an extra special win for him. He comes here with just one run under his belt this season although that was a 3 ¼ length beating of Tidal Nay in the Hennessy Gold Cup, his Cheltenham record reads 1-1-1-1. Henderson’s record with horses at Cheltenham is second to none. Off a long rest is not no good. Bobs Worth is the favourite and rightly so!

SIR DES CHAMPS, also has an unbeaten Cheltenham and Festival but his form this year is not good enough to land this. Would need to improve on what we have seen.

SILVINIACO CONTI is the big hope and the up and coming chaser to fill the boots of Denman and Kauto Star. Nicholls is bullish and what he has done this season puts him in the mix. Could give Bobs Worth a race.

LONG RUN bids to regain his crown but vibes are not good. Cheek Pieces will be worn and he doesn’t look the horse of old. Won the King George, yes, but just, and should be not match for Bobs Worth or Conti.

Of the outsiders the each way play in the race is THE GIANT BOLSTER 14/1. David Bridgewater is a hard worker and he has trained this horse to get 100% out of it. If you put 100% in you reap what you sew. Placed in a Gold Cup already he has a real chance at value odds.

For me the outstanding two horses are BOBS WORTH and SILVINIACO CONTI. A pro bet would be to Dutch the two. Put a gun to my head and I will go for Bobs Worth

BOBS WORTH WIN @ 11/4 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

THE GIANT BOLSTER EW @ 14/1 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

For me the festival is more or less over after the Gold Cup. The last three races are an amateur riders race and the Pipe and Henderson races where they throw plenty at them. These are the picks for the last three races;

4.00 CGA Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup

He may be a veteran but Chapoturgeon is a festival favourite. He looked to have retained plenty of his old ability when last seen winning at Newbury. Still part owned by former trainer Paul Nicholls and he could yet provide Nicholls with some festival glory. 9/2 is not the best price but he has the credentials to win this.

CHAPOTURGEON EW @ 11/4 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

4-40 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle

This is the Martin Pipe race and it is quite obvious that son David Pipe would love to win it. Usually he would fire many bullets at this race, but today he fires one, the four timer seeking GEVREY CHAMBERTIN. There is no doubting his credentials and the only worry is the rise in the weights. However the fact that Pipe fires only one at this prize he really wants to win is a big tip in itself!

GEVREY CHAMBERTIN EW 9/2 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

5-15 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup

Like the Pipe race Nicky Henderson would love to win the race named after his father. Unlike David Pipe, Nicky Henderson fires six bullets at this target! I think it is a strong possibility he will hit the target and the horses I like are the classy Petit Robin and French Opera. Both have been high class horses in their time and if they recapture just a small amount of their past form then they will play a massive role in this. 20/1 each way each of two is not a bad bet!

Wednesday was VERY good with Back In Focus and The New One Landing Max Bets. Sizing Europe without Sprinter Sacre at Evens made it a clean sweep of the Max Bets. Hadrians Approached and Master of the Sea were placed ew and also collected. Thursday Going: GOOD TO SOFT / SOFT IN PLACES

1-30 JEWSON NOVICE CHASE

Dynaste is a MAXIMUM BET and is my best bet of the week. I can not see this beaten. He has been sensational this year and David Pipe has elected for this as opposed to the RSA Chase. Captain Conan would have been a good favourite had Dynaste gone for the RSA but with Dynaste in the race I can see now other outcome other than a convincing Dynaste Win.

DYNASTE is a MAXIMUM BET take 7/4 early! Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

2-05 PERTEMPS FINAL

We go from a relatively easy race to kick off to anything but, this is an ultra-competitive handicap with only 13 pounds between all 24 runners. There are plenty with solid claims here, infact you could back half the field and still not find the winner. Therefore I advise playing it small in this race but I do like the market leader here

Sam Winner (Win) trained by Paul Nicholls is a six year old who was smart over hurdles as a juvenile and came back after a year off to beat Peddlers Cross in a jumpers bumper. That was his second run back and I am hoping that he is lining up here on a fair mark. Certainly man of the moment Ruby Walsh is a big plus from the saddle. 4/1 is not huge but he looks to tick more boxes than most.

SAM WINNER, WIN BET 4/1 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

2-40 RYANAIR CHASE

Slight disappointing renewal of this, expected better in the build up to this. I have looked at this every which way and have looked for reasons to oppose Cue Card. I say that because I am not a fan of the horse, or the jockey, but I keep coming back, by default to Cue Card.

His most credible rivals are First Lieutenant and Riverside Theatre. I am never one to discount Nicky Henderson’s horses but I think this will be a tough task for Riverside. So the question is whether First Lieutenant will beat Cue Card and I think that Cue Card may have too much speed for him and am siding with the Joe Tizzard Cue Card.

CUE CARD WIN BET 10/3 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

3-20 THE WORLD HURDLE

Oscar-WhiskyUsually this is a simply one line preview, in so much as Big Buck’s has dominated this event and always wins. However for the first time in a while we have a competitive world Hurdle. The main line of form here is the race where REVE DE SIVOLA beat OSCAR WHISKY at Cheltenham on Heavy going. The ground will be better and suit Oscar Whiskey and I think he will turn that about and is the most likely winner!

I am backing OSCAR WHISKY to win here and having an each way bet on one of my favourite horses in training, GET ME OUT OF HERE (ew). This is somewhat speculative, but this horse has plenty of ability and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gives the principals something to think about. Decent value each way bet

OSCAR WHISKY WIN BET 4/1, GET ME OUT OF HERE ew 11/1 Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

4-00 BYRNE GROUP PLATE

HUNT BALL. This time last year Hunt Ball was talked about as a Gold Cup horse. He was mightily impressive. He hasn’t had a great year (like many of us) mainly due to the bad going. On better ground, in the Grade 3 Handicap I am very strong on this one; the forgotten horse!

HUNT BALL. 7/1 Each Way Bet. Bet with William Hill Bet With Bet365

4-40 AMATEUR HANDICAP

GALAXY ROCK. EACH WAY on Galaxy Rock is the only bet I will be having but not to any major stakes. The ground has come right for him and we know he goes round Cheltenham well. In fact regulars will remember him last year bolting up at Cheltenham under McCoy.

Kauto Star is our tip to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup

Yesterday 4 out of 5 tips were winners, 3 Wins at 7/2, 5/1 and 5/6 and 1 Each Way at 8/1, we are in great form. Don’t forget our 50/1 winner from Wednesday and winners on Tuesday.

Day 4 At Cheltenham, Friday 16th March 2012, Gold Cup Day Tips

Its been a long week but a great week, here is the last day, but the BIG DAY of the Cheltenham Festival!

KAUTO STAR TO WIN THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP AND A PLACE IN HISTORY!

1:30 JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1)

Nicky Henderson has a terrific record here in the Triumph and his horses are flying, so first stop is to look at the Henderson runners! As he doesn’t have any we need to get to work!

Stats…of last 10 winners;

  • 8/10 won last time out
  • 5/10 were first or second in the market
  • 9/10 have won 50% of hurdle races
  • 6/10 ran at Kempton or Sandown on last run
  • 8/10 held up off the pace BUT their has been a bias to front runners this week

On form GRUMETTI has looked the real deal, but was beaten, only to be given the race in the Stewards at Cheltenham by PEARL SWAN. For me the shortlist is

  • Baby Mix – would have been a strong bet but disappointed at Cheltenham and finished last, big blot on his copy book
  • Grumetti – looks solid but has had interrupted prep and was beaten by Pear Swan
  • Pearl Swan, beat Grumetti but stewards said unfairly
  • Balder Success – unbeaten BUT Thornton has chosen Grumetti.
  • Two from three is a Dutch bet, PEARL SWAN and BABY MIX, fear Grumetti

If Baby Mix runs to his best he will win, but note the word “IF” – tough race.

Summary: BABY MIX Win 6/1 with Bet365, plus free bet on next Channel 4 race, see Bet365 offer on their site.

2:05 Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

Gosh! Where do we start. This is as tough as it gets and in these races, like the other day when we got a nice 50/1 in to 40/1 winner. Two at a price, small bets, for me are;

    • Magnifique Etoile for Charlie Longsden Each Way and…
    • Snap Tie for Philip Hobbs. This could be very interestng! He has not raced for 882 days, but he is high class at his best and they run first time here…Hmmm..

Snap Tie made a successful chasing debut in novice at Cheltenham only outing in 2009/10: not seen since due to tendon and suspensory injuries. A high class horse and could pull it off here! Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson are no fools, so there has to be something in it!

Summary: SNAP TIE NON RUNNER MAGNIFIQUE ETOILE Each Way 22/1 with Bet365

2:40 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Registered As The Spa Novices’ Hurdle) (Grade 1)

No need to mess about here. The horse I have been desperate to back at Cheltenham runs today here and that horse is BOSTON BOB. Willie Mullins had a winner on Thursday with Sir DesChamps (advised by us and won 3-1) and also won the bumper so is in good form. I will not mince my words, MAX BET Boston Bob. Here is what Timeform say about the horse; 3 starts over hurdles, namely maiden at Navan in November, Grade 1 Navan Novices’ Hurdle (beat Mount Benbulben 4½ lengths) in December and Grade 2 Synergy Security Solutions Novices’ Hurdle at Leopardstown in January: beat Lyreen Legend 2¼ lengths in 11-runner event for latest success, jumping fluently held up and leading before last: will stay 3m: top-class prospect Will be too good for them.

Summary: BOSTON BOB Win, 6/4 with Bet365

3:20 Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1)

This is the big race of the week, and its fascinating! There are so many ifs and maybes here, but this is my view and this is what I will be doing. This is between LONG RUN and KAUTO STAR who all things been equal, and combined winners of three Gold Cups are better than these by miles. Now come the buts…

      • Long Run has looked a shadow of his former self, or he has been beaten by Kauto Star back to his bet
  • But Kauto has been the subject of an injury scare.

  • He has however come out of it fine and I think its wasn’t as serious as the media have made out, just a view.

The sensible bet is a DUTCH BET on Kauto Star and Long Run (ie back both) but in my view Kauto Star will regain the Gold Cup and is a great EW price now at 4/1+. Midnight Chase is the best outsider of the rest. I have to admit my heart is behind Kauto and I will cry like a baby if he wins it! Love the horse and there may be another chapter in the wonderful Kauto Star story!

Summary: KAUTO STAR to Win the Gold Cup at 4/1 with Bet365, MIDNIGHT CHASE Each Way at 10/1 with Bet365

4:00 Christie’s Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup

Usually I would not be interested in this but as you know we have already put up CLOUDY LANE at 11/1. Much shorter now, but we feel strongly this is a good bet. If you are on at 11/1 you have some value, it’s still good value backing at 6/1.

Summary: CLOUDY LANE Win 6/1 with Ladbrokes

4:40 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

This is a major puzzle to solve! David Pipe is playing the numbers game, shooting so many bullets in order to win the race in his father’s name. Honestly I am stumped and will not be betting in the race. If you forced me to give you one I would suggest that BOCCIANI has a good chance with a very good jockey aboard and a trainer who deserves a festival winner.

Summary: Small Each Way on BOCCIANI at 40/1 with Betvictor

5:15 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup (Grade 3 Handicap)

Named after Nicky Henderson’s father. He too is desperate to win the race and is unloading plenty of ammunition! Again this is a nightmare to call and is a bit after the Lord Mayor’s show. Again if you forced a bet out of me I would suggest that this will go to Nicky Henderson, but with which one? Well I will go with TANKS FOR THAT, but only small.

Summary: Small Each Way on TANKS FOR THAT, 16/1 with Paddypower

And that’s it for Cheltenham for 2012. Hope you have been happy with the guide and we gave value for money!

WEDNESDAY UNE ARTISTE WINS, ADVISED AT 50/1

Thursday Day Three at Cheltenham

It’s a quieter day for us betting wise, but still an exciting day ahead. It looks like a day of short priced winners!

1:30 Jewson Novices’ Chase (Registered As The Golden Miller Novices’ Chase) (Grade 2)

Good race here.I think this is a match between the impressive PEDDLERS CROSS who was beaten (easily) by Sprinter Sacre and the Irish Hotpot SIR DESCHAMPS. There has been a big word for the Nicholls horse this week, CRYSTAL BONUS but I think the Irish horse is a bit better than the rest and is a confident bet here.

1pt, SIR DES CHAMPS WIN BET 7/2 with bet365

2:05 Pertemps Final (Listed Handicap Hurdle)

This is nightmare every year! This year is no exception. Stats… • 6 of the last 10 winners were between 14 and 20/1 • Only 1 fav has won in last 11 runnings • French bread horses are 0 from 46 • 5 year olds poor record • Jonjo O’Neill and David Pipe both won twice in last 10 years. So what does that tell us? Well it only reinforces what I think is well in here and is a decent bet, the David Pipe trained OUR FATHER. Beat Shoreacres at Ascot and looks to be plotted up for this. Timmy Murphy has been on for all his starts for David Pipe and this looks a proper Pipe Plot to me!

2pts, OUR FATHER WIN BET 5/1 with Stan James

2:40 Ryanair Chase (Registered As The Festival Trophy Chase) (Grade 1)

Good race here. A grade 1 and we have there exceptional contenders; ALBERTAS RUN, SOMMERSBY and the horse I think is a class act and a class above, RIVERSIDE THEATRE. I really fancy this Nicky Henderson runner here. Owned by James Nesbit. Riverside Theatre is TOP CLASS, he won the Betfair Ascot Chase (beat Gauvain 10 lengths) in 2010/11: very good 12 lengths second to stable-companion Long Run in King George VI Chase at Kempton in between: off 12 months (reportedly suffered stress fracture to pelvis in March 2011), as good as ever when winning latest renewal of Betfair Ascot Chase by 3 lengths from Medermit, jumping/travelling well and having bit to spare: stays 3m: acts on soft and good to firm ground: sets the standard in this. That is an understatement, he is better than these and will win in my view.

5pts, Riverside Theatre, WIN 5/1 with Paddy Power

3:20 Ladbrokes World Hurdle (Grade 1)

No need for any waffle, Big Buck’s. If you don’t know why then probably should give up betting and take up knitting!

5pts, Big Bucks, WIN 4/6 with Stan James

4:00 Byrne Group Plate (Grade 3 Handicap Chase)

This is more competitive race, but I always like to see what the Ferdy Murphy handicap plot is for the festival. As early as last week AP McCOY was booked by the stable for DIVERS and I have been watching this ones races this year and THIS IS IN MY VIEW A HORSE PLOTTED UP FOR THE FESTIVAL! If you watch the races this year you will see what I mean!TAKE THE EARLY PRICES HERE!

1pt, DIVERS, decent EACH WAY Bet 7/1 with Bet365, 5 Places Paid

Wednesday Cheltenham Tips, Day 3 Preview

Day Three of the Cheltenham Festival and by my calculations it will be one a piece with the Punters claiming victory on Day One but the bookmakers pulling it back on Day Two, so today could be the crucial day for all involved during the week.

1.30pm Jewson Novices’ Chase

The opening race revolves around one horse, the Donald McCain PEDDLERS CROSS and if they have him back in A1 condition then he could simply blow these rivals away. The yard knows that they have a top class horse on their hands and even though he’s not had the perfect preparation he would not be lining up unless they knew he was 100%. If I’m honest I would be swerving Sprinter Sacre as well!!

Bar the favourite you have to respect the Paul Nicholls trained Cristal Bonus but the one that is a stand out each way bet for me is the Martin Keighley trained CHAMPION COURT.

Best odds offered: CHAMPION COURT 8/1 ¼ odds 1, 2 and 3 places Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed – Boylesports.
2.05pm Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle Usually a tricky race to call and this year is certainly no exception but I’m hoping we’ve got the race covered. I’ve got my eye on two horses in the race bar the possible short priced favourite Our Father and they are SERGENT GUIB’S and SONOFVIC both of which could be doing all the best work at the finish. So my approach is simple split my stakes and hope one of them gets the job done. If I start getting heavily involved in races like this then I’ve got no chance of making money at the Festival. Best odds offered on SERGENT GUIB’S 20/1 with BetVictor and SONOFVIC 10/1 with Betfred and both bookmakers go Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed.  2.40pm Ryanair Chase A race on paper which looks wide open and you can give most of the runners some sort of chance on the form book but the best approach here is to go with the horse that has solid course form. The horse in question is ALBERTAS RUN and he’ll take all the beating with the trip, ground and course in his favour. He’s a horse that AP McCoy adores, so I genuinely hope they put in a clear round, as I can’t see them being out of the frame at a tasty 8/1. Best odds offered on Albertas Run- 8/1 Bet365 Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed. 3.20pm Ladbrokes World Hurdle The crème de la crème of the staying division over the smaller obstacles lines up for top honours over 3 miles and I hate to sound boring (again) but who beats BIG BUCKS?! I adore this horse and feel very lucky to have spent some time with him down at Ditcheat. He is one of the best looking horses I’ve ever laid eyes on and extremely athletic. I know the Stewart family adore him and still get nervous when he turns up but he’ll always just find enough to get the job done and that’s a real key asset. The main danger on the face of it looks to be the Nicky Henderson trained OSCAR WHISKY and I can see him being heavily backed each way on the day, so my advice would be to get involved now with the right firm. Best odds offered on OSCAR WHISKY 4/1 Each Way Boylesports Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed.4.00p.m BYRNE GROUP PLATE Handicap Chase One of the most competitive handicaps of the week and I’m really hoping the Paul Nicholls trained CRACK AWAY JACK will make the line up, as this could be just what the doctor ordered. He has had a stop start career and since switching to Team Ditcheat we’ve only seen himtwice on the track. The first race was at Cheltenham back in November, the trip was 2 miles over fences and he showed me enough that day to believe Paul had something to work with moving forward. The next time we saw him was over 2 miles 3 furlongs over hurdles at Ascot and I was definitely left with the impression there was more to come. So, do we take the plunge with a horse that’s not really showing us much at present well the answer is “YES”. If Paul can get him back to anywhere near his old form then I’m convinced he’ll pick these up and spit them out. Best odds offered on CRACK AWAY JACK 8/1 ¼ odds 1, 2, 3 and 4 places Betfred Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed. 4.40pm Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup So we come to the lucky last and another tricky affair but I’ve been involved with a horse for some time now and that’s the unexposed SUNNYHILLBOY. I was at the track last year when there were some positive vibes coming out of the McManus camp with regards to the son of Old Vic, which made me sit up and take note but it didn’t really go according to plan and the rest is history. Since then the horse has shown some mixed form but I’m taking a guess that this could have been the plan since last year and the team could be on a recovery mission. So the advice is don’t wait for the day itself let’s get involved now as I’m convinced he’ll be one of the best backed horses of the day. Best odds on Sunnyhillboy 10/1 Bet365 Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed.

“4:40 Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

This is a competitive four year-old hurdle and is a race I somewhat cruelly call a poor-man’s Triumph hurdle. Indeed it is for horses not good enough for the grade 1 on Friday. That said there are plenty of decent sorts in the field and always provides a good spectacle. This is a good race to find a big priced winner. Three of the last seven winners were the highest rated Flat horse in the race. Only 2 favourites have won in the last 7 running’s. 5 of the last 7 winners trained in Britain. Fillies have a high strike rate with 3 out of the last 6 winners being fillies. Could be a bookies benefit this so SMALL STAKES if you are betting

1:30 Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase (Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Chase)

The problem with this race is it’s an amateur riders race so usual disclaimers apply. Personally speaking I don’t have much of a bet in these sorts of races, you will be let down more than you will be delighted with the ride the horse you back gets, as a rule. But the rules of engagement are clear and must be borne in mind.

 Stats

·         8 from the last 10 winners aged 7 or 8

·         6 year olds or less only 1 win in 32 running’s

·         Horses that were favourite last time they ran, 0 from 41 running’s

·         Favs in this race, 2 from last 11 running’s

For me looking at the stats, HARRY THE VIKING fits the bill. He is the right age and wasn’t favourite last time out, he beat a 6/4 fav and Ikorodu Road, who has since followed up to win and frank the form. There are some shocking jockeys in this field, but Will Biddick is pretty good and in this field is one of the best. Trained by Paul Nicholls, Harry The Viking is the pick, but only a small bet advised.

Small win bet: HARRY THE VIKING (stress small).

2:05 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle (Registered As The Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle) (Grade 1)  Never an easy puzzle to solve. At the entries stage I thought BOSTON BOB would win this, but he goes of the Albert Bartlett on Friday (Gold Cup Day) instead. Therefore I have to look elsewhere. Mullins holds a crop of entries and we must start by looking at what Ireland’s Champion trainer has chosen to run. Simonsig looks the business in this race. Winner of two of his three starts for Nicky Henderson and second to Fingal Bay at Sandown, the six-year-old was last seen cruising to victory in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso. He is a seriously good horse. Fingal Bay is exceptional and this is the best form by far in this race.   Summary: Simonsig is a good bet to win here!   2:40 RSA Chase (Grade 1) **MAX BET** I am absolutely delighted that Grand Crus has opted for this race, and is a MAXIMUM BET here. Grand Crus is the only serious challenger Big Buck’s has ever had over hurdles and over fences he has looked awesome. He has won 3 times, including a grade 1. He looks to me head and shoulders above the rest of them, with the exception of Bob’s Worth who could pose the biggest threat. That said I thought he was a serious Gold Cup contender, but in the RSA I think he is a massively strong bet and I am not mincing my words, MAXIMUM STAKES advised. I believe he will win this readily. Summary: GRAND CRUS, MAXIMUM BET    3:20 sportingbet.com Queen Mother Champion Chase (Grade 1) **MAX BET** The Champion will defend his crown and at the prices, EVENS, he is the best bet of the Cheltenham Festival. He has shown his class, his defeats in Ireland we over 3miles + but over 2 miles he is unbeatable. He absolutely murdered Big Zeb and though that was on Heavy going I have absolutely no doubles whatsoever that he will win here. I would suggest that Finians Rainbow is his biggest rival here but in all honesty he will win this comfortably. Summary: At the Prices Sizing Europe is the best bet of the week, Maximum Bet.      4:00 Coral Cup (Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle) Tough.  At the entries stage I narrowed this down to two, Featherbed Lane and Get Me Out Of Here. Regular subscribers will know I have followed Jonjo O’Neil’s horse since he won his bumper and he is one of my favourite horses. I backed him at Newbury and he ran on really well after he was hampered by the fall of Darlan. Make no mistake this is not sentiment, this is a good bet. Featherbed Lane I rate higher, but that one badly disappointed last time out at Haydock.   Summary: Get Me Out Of Here, EW Bet     4:40 Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)   This is a competitive four year-old hurdle and is a race I somewhat cruelly call a poor-man’s Triumph hurdle. Could be a bookies benefit this so SMALL STAKES if you  are betting   My Pick here is;  UNE ARTISTE @ 50/1 ew for Nicky Henderson     5:15 Weatherbys Champion Bumper (Standard Open NH Flat Race) (Grade1)    This is a race that has been won by such horses as Dunguib and Cue Card. It is the hardest race of the day to solve.  The Irish have won almost three times as many runnings of this as the home trainers.  Just five of the 19 winners could be found outside the first six in the betting.   This is tough and there is an element of guesswork here, but I have narrowed this down to NEW YEAR’s EVE who I think, as  flat bred, by Motivator, has looked exceptional and  could provide a winner for first year trainer John Ferguson.   Summary: Small bet NEW YEAR’s EVE.

Wednesday Cheltenham Tips, Day 2 Preview

It’s Day Two of the Cheltenham Festival and at this stage I’m hoping the punters have the upper hand on the bookmakers.

1.30pm Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase

The opening race on day two always seems to attract a decent field which is run over 4 miles for amateur riders, so the best approach is to be with a horse who is progressive, a sound jumper who stays well with a decent jockey in the saddle and then we shouldn’t be far away. Based on those requirements I’ve opted for HARRY THE VIKING, who ticks all the right boxes. In fact at this stage I rate him one of the best each way bets for the week.

Best each way terms offered: Harry the Viking 6/1 ¼ odds 1, 2 and 3 places Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed – Boylesports.
2.05pm Neptune Investment Management Fund Novices’ Hurdle Usually a tricky race to call and this year is no exception but I’m hoping we’ve already got the winner sorted. It comes in the shape of the gorgeous grey from Seven Barrows SIMONSIG and if he turns up in top form I’m convinced they will not see which way he goes. He’s a horse that really fills the eye and has any amount of gears but more importantly travels well through his races, which is crucial at Cheltenham. I’ve been backing him for this race over the last 2/3 months at double figures but he was never a guaranteed runner in the event as he also had a Supreme Novice entry but I just had it in my mind that the longer trip would allow him to get into a rhythm and pick them off late on. Best odds offered on Simonsig 5/2 Boylesports (Best Odds Guaranteed) 2.40pm RSA Chase Now we come to a race which revolves around another grey GRANDS CRUS and if he turns up in this contest then he looks one of the bankers for the Festival. At the time of writing he’s still 2/1 with William Hill but they are not going non runner, no bet so I can’t advised you to get involved at this stage. If he takes in this race then the market will revolve around him but if you’re looking for an each way selection to take him on with then look no further than FIRST LIEUTENANT. He’s currently 5/1 with Boylesports and that rates the best angle at this stage on a horse with great course form. Best odds offered on First Lieutenant – 5/1 Boylesports (Non Runner No Bet) 3.20pm Sportingbet.com queen Mother Champion Chase The crème de la crème of the Chasing division line up for top honours over 2 miles and I hate to sound boring but who beats SIZING EUROPE?! I adore this horse and he looks another banker for the Festival, so all we need is a clear round and its job done. You can over complicate races at the Festival but he has everything in his favour and looks more solid than BIG BUCKS in relation to odds, as he’ll need to up his game against the likes of Oscar Whisky who is an unknown at the trip. Best odds offered on SIZING EUROPE 10/11 widely available Bet 365 (Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed) 4.00p.m Coral Cup One of the most competitive handicaps of the week and I’m hoping the Gordon Elliott trained CARLITO BRIGANTE can repeat the dose. He turned up last year and took this event off a mark of 142, so he faces a much stiffer task off 155. Saying all that he won with any amount in hand and knowing how shrewd Gordon Elliott is then I’m convinced he would have planned this for some time. He has a great attitude and wants to train quality horses so that is where Gigginstown House Stud comes into play. If he delivers on the big stage they will commit more horses to him so be rest assured he will place those horses to good effect. This 6yo son of Haafhd can definitely be ultra competitive off this mark and at 16/1 he rates one of my strongest each way selections for the week. Best odds offered on CARLITO BRIGANTE 16/1 ¼ odds 1, 2, 3 and 4 places BOYLESPORTS (Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed). 4.40pm Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle So we come to another tricky handicap or though it may seem at first glance but I’ve been involved with a horse for some time and that’s the hot favourite VENDOR. He looks well in on my figures and even though he’s still got to go and prove himself on the day I feel he’s the most likely winner. There are plenty of dangers in the line up and a few unexposed types but the one which really catches the eye is the Paul Nicholls trained ULCK DU LIN who could be anything so keep him on side. Best odds on Vendor 7/2 Bet365 (Non Runner, No Bet and Best Odds Guaranteed).5.15pm Weatherbys Champion Bumper This is a case of grabbing the pin and just taking the plunge at this stage but if pressed to find one for you to side with on the day then look no further than the John Ferguson trained NEW YEAR’S EVE who will surely be suited by the ground conditions and could have too much speed for most of these. The key is that John Ferguson has booked Barry Geraghty for the son of Motivator and he could just be the type to progress next season into Championship level over hurdles. Best Odds on New Year’s Eve 8/1 Ladbrokes ¼ odds 1, 2 and 3 places. (Non Runner, No Bet)

Tuesday Cheltenham Tips 2012

It’s Day One of the Cheltenham Festival and at this stage all the hopes, dreams and ante pot bets are still very much alive but this is where the talking stops.

1.30pm William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

The first race of the meeting is probably one of the most eagerly awaited and sets the tone for the rest of the week. This year’s renewal looks a wide open affair on paper but I’m convinced a certain JP McManus has got it covered. He owns the Nicky Henderson trained Darlan and the recently purchased Colour Squadron so my advice is simple, look for the bookmaker who is offering the best each way terms and be involved with both horses.

Best each way terms offered: Skybet Darlan at 5/1 and Colour Squadron 14/1 ¼ odds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 places.

2.05pm Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy

Usually a tricky race to call and the favourites don’t have a great record in the race but here’s hoping that will have all changed by 2.15pm on Tuesday. I must confess I never really get involved with hyped horses but take it from me SPRINTER SACRE is the next superstar of the bigger obstacles.

I feel blessed to have been around some of the best horses during my time in the sport but this fellow blew me away at Newbury last time and the reaction from Trainer and Jockey immediately afterwards told me all I need to know. He could be anything and anyone wanting to take him on, then do so at your own peril. If he puts in a clear round he wins comprehensively.

Best odds offered on Sprinter Sacre 10/11 with Paddy Power (Best Odds Guaranteed)

2.40pm JLT Speciality Handicap Chase

Now we come to one of the most competitive races of the week so where do we start?! Well it’s simple with the top weight of course and I’ll be very disappointed if QUANTITATIVEEASING doesn’t go well. Yes, there are plenty of unexposed types in the field but this lightly raced 7yo has plenty going for him. What gives me even more confidence is that Nicky Henderson has protected his handicap mark by only running him twice this season and I’m sure this has been the plan for sometime so don’t be surprised if he’s a lot shorter on the day. I love the angle of a fresh horse heading to the Festival and tick’s all the right boxes.

Alan King’s Hold on Julio looks the main danger, but he’s missed a few engagements of late so that dampens enthusiasm. The other horse which really takes my eye is the Ian Williams  trained BAILE ANRAI, who may not get in but if he does get a run then 16/1 is massive at the time of writing so my advice would be to get involved now and if we don’t get a run then we’ll get our money back. All in all don’t over complicate matters as we are siding with a horse who is a good traveller, consistent, sound jumper but more importantly has quality course form.

Best odds offered on Quantitativeeasing – 13/2 Totesport   ¼ odds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 places.

Best odds offered on Baile Anrai – 16/1 BetVictor (Non Runner No Bet)

3.20pm Stan James Champion Hurdle

The crème de la crème of the Hurdling division line up for top honours and I hate to sound boring but who beats HURRICANE FLY?! I’ve never been a fan of the horse until last year and as I stood to watch the Champion Hurdle from the Parade ring, I soon realised what was about to unfold. Not only did the Fly have a tall reputation at home but the son of Montjeu was being talked about by the right people as if he was PEGASUS and the rest is history……..!!

I’ve got to say at this stage the 10/11 on offer from Paddy Power is incredible value, as not only are they best priced on the favourite but they are also offering Best Odds Guaranteed. So if the bookies try and get the favourite beat on the day and he drifts in the market you can be rest assured you’ll be paid out at the higher price (basically it’s a win, win situation) if you want to be with the Fly.

Of the dangers you have to respect Zarkandar especially with such glowing reports of late regards to his home work but I would take a look at the market without Hurricane Fly. I was at Seven Barrows only last week and BINOCULAR looked a complete different horse to the one I’ve seen in the past. He’s really bulked up and whatever beats him in the Champion wins – so the 5/2 on offer with Paddy Power looks worth grabbing now.

Best odds offered on Hurricane Fly 10/11 with Paddy Power.

BINOCULAR at 5/2 w/o Hurricane Fly market with Paddy Power.

4.00p.m Glenfarclas Handicap Chase (Cross Country Chase)

Probably not everyone’s cup of tea but a real spectacle if you’re on course and always adds an extra bit of excitement to the afternoon. I’m sure the jockey’s who are riding in the race this time will make sure they know where they’re going, because a number of high profile runners last time took the wrong course, which left it open for the old warrior Garde Champetre to come home in front. I’m sure compensation awaits for SCOTSIRISH, as he’ll love the drying ground and would definitely have won that day. His stable companion Uncle Junior has been put up as one to follow for the Festival at some of the Preview nights but I’ll be very surprised if he’s not playing second fiddle to the son of Zaffaran.

Best odds offered on SCOTSIRISH 10/3 Sportingbet ¼ odds 1, 2, 3 and 4 places.

4.40pm OLBG Mares’ Hurdle (Registered as the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle)

Well the sponsors OLBG will be hoping that the super mare QUEVEGA wins this contest by a distance for the third consecutive time. She’s definitely good enough to be in the Champion Hurdle line up and I honestly can’t see her being beaten again. True, the odds of reward are skinny but a winner is a winner. You can invest in an ISA with your friendly bank or building society for some 15 years to get you the same return as taking the plunge on Quevega for less than an hour and I know which one I’d prefer to do!! Do you?!

Saying all that what can we find to finish second? Honestly, it’s wide open bar the favourite, so my advice would be if the odds on is not your bag then just sit back and admire the wonder mare in action. She’s in a class of her own and Willie Mullins has to be commended with her handling to date.

Best odds on Quevega 4/7 William Hill (Best Odds Guaranteed).

5.15pm Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase

The last race on the card looks a tad tricky at the time of writing but by my reckoning the Punters will be well in front if the results have gone according to plan, so keep your powder dry for Day Two.

If I had to pick one then I would look no further than the progressive CARRICKBOY, who I feel still has plenty to offer off his current mark. His shrewd Trainer definitely knows the time of day and Aidan Coleman is riding better than ever, so a good spin is in the offing.

Best Odds on Carrickboy 16/1 BetVictor ¼ odds 1, 2, 3 and 4 places.

1.30pm Darlan at 5/1 and Colour Squadron 14/1
2.05pm Sprinter Sacre 10/11
2.40pm Quantitativeeasing – 13/2
3.20pm Hurricane Fly 10/11
4.00pm Scotsirish 10/3

4.40pm Quevega 4/7

5.15pm Carrickboy 16/1
