Hills Make Henderson Odds On For Record Cheltenham Festival

The countdown to Cheltenham continued this morning, where Nicky Henderson played host to a Festival Press Morning and unveiled the stellar squad of stars he will take to do battle in 18 days’ time.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Nicky Henderson

William Hill King George winner Long Run, and Champion Hurdler Binocular were amongst those on show, and will spearhead a team who could smash through Fulke Walwyn’s all-time winnngmost Cheltenham record for their handler.

William Hill make it a 4-5 chance that Henderson is crowned the Festival’s greatest ever trainer with four or more victories throughout the four days, whilst he is a 15-8 chance to take the Thomas Pink Leading Trainer award, ahead of 11-8 favourite Paul Nicholls.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’The strength and depth of Nicky Henderson’s Cheltenham challenge is simply outstanding this year – indicated by his odds-on price to smash through Fulke Walwyn’s record of 40 Festival winners. The famous treble-winning Manchester United squad of the ’98-99 season boasted less stars!’’

King Reveals Festival Team

Alan King paraded his Cheltenham Festival team at the Barbury Castle Estate annual open day on Tuesday morning, stating Medermit is his ‘best chance of the week’, with William Hill cutting the seven-year-old from 5-1 into 9-2 second-favouritism for the Arkle Trophy.

Alan King Cheltenham Festival Team

The Wiltshire-based handler also has high hopes for Bensalem, who is 6-1 market leader for the Festival Handicap Chase, commenting ‘we’re going to see the proper Bensalem at Cheltenham’ – William Hill are offering both Medermit and Bensalem at 13-2 to be placed in their respective events.

King was highly enthusiastic with regards to Champion Hurdle contender Mille Chief stating he ‘can’t wait’ for the big race as the five-year-old will be a ‘better horse on good ground’. Mille Chief is currently available at 14-1 for the showpiece two-mile event, and has been steadily supported in recent weeks following Antepost advice.

Choc Thornton will be the likely partner to many of the trainer’s Festival hopefuls, and is 10-1 to be Leading Jockey over the four days.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said ‘After a disappointing season last year, a revitalised Barbury Castle team will be heading to Prestbury in 2011 on the back of a solid build up this time around, and 13-2 about King’s two self-nominated best chances being placed could start the week off with a bang’.

Paul Nicholls Media Day – Videos

Ahead of Cheltenham Paul Nicholls unveils his Cheltenham Festival team for 2011….Here are two excellent videos of the day…

Part 1

Part 2

Cheltenham Festival Top Trainer Betting……

William Hill have priced up the Cheltenham Festival Thomas Pink Leading Trainer Award, installing Paul Nicholls as 11-8 market leader to lift the coveted prize.

2010 leading trainer Nicky Henderson boasts an enviable fleet this season, with numerous runners occupying fancied positions in current Antepost markets, and the Lambourn handler holds second-favouritism at 15-8.

Ireland’s Champion Trainer Willie Mullins fields an equally strong battalion with the likes of Hurricane Fly, Zaidpour and So Young amongst others, and takes third spot in the book at 13-2.

Priced at 14-1, Philip Hobbs and Nigel Twiston-Davies will be heading to Prestbury with Menorah and Imperial Commander spearheading their respective teams in an attempt to follow up on last year’s Championship race successes.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said ‘The odds suggest the Festival trainers’ title will be an all-out battle between Nicholls and Henderson. However, the very-much in-form Willie Mullins appears to be manoeuvring into a favourable position, and has an arguable slam-dunk already in the form of Quevega. At 13-2, he could just be the valuable alternative away from the duelling duo.’

Cheltenham Festival
Thomas Pink Leading Trainer Award: 11-8 Paul Nicholls, 15-8 Nicky Henderson, 13-2 Willie Mullins, 14-1 Nigel Twiston-Davies, Philip Hobbs, 16-1 Alan King, David Pipe, 33-1 Donald McCain, 40-1 Ferdy Murphy, Jonjo O’Neill

(win only – market will be settled on the number of winners, if there is a tie the greater number of second places will determine the winner, again if there is a tie the greatest number of third places will determine the winner – excludes Derby Charity Race)

Nicholls or Henderson Top Festival Trainer?

Nicky Henderson nudges ever nearer to Paul Nicholls’ sixth successive National Hunt Trainers’ Championship, however the Ditcheat handler remains William Hill’s 1-2 favourite (from 2-5) to secure yet another title – and furthermore, the firm’s 5-6 market leader to train more Cheltenham Festival winners than his rival.

Nicky Henderson is numerically the most successful current trainer at the Festival, and he is preparing for Prestbury 2011 with arguably his strongest team ever, although priced at 13-8, he is still the lesser fancied of the pair.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said, ‘Having had such a good start to the season, can the Seven Barrows team maintain the momentum in March? Nicholls isn’t Champion Trainer for nothing, and he’ll ensure his string is primed accordingly for Cheltenham, so at 5-6, we have him fancied to train more Festival winners than the Lambourn challenger ’.

Who will train the most Cheltenham Festival winners?: 5-6 Paul Nicholls, 13-8 Nicky Henderson, 9-2 Tie (win only, excludes St Patrick’s Day Derby Charity Race)

UPDATED National Hunt Trainers’ Championship: 1-2 Paul Nicholls (from 2-5), 6-4 Nicky Henderson (from 9-4)

Big Buck’s Now 11/10 With VC for World Hurdle

Victor Chandler have pushed out Big Buck’s from Evens to 11/10 for the Ladbroke World Hurdle after the success of Fiveforthree at Punchestown earlier today.

In other news the firm have slashed both Don’t Push It (5 from 12) and Oscar Time (6 from 12) in their market who will go off favourite for the John Smith’s Grand National.

VC spokesperson Charlie McCann: “ Big Buck’s has been odds on for his last seven wins but we couldn’t lay him at Evens and have decided to try and get him in the book by offering 11/10. Fiveforthree has a Festival win to his name, has won a Grade 1 over 3m and in our opinion can now be added to Grand Crus, Mourad and Karabak as realistic contenders for Big Buck’s World Hurdle crown.
