Williams Happy With Diamond Harry

Nick Williams says he is more than Happy with Diamond Harry as he bids for the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

This is what head of the owning syndicate  had to say;

“He’s fine and we’ve saved him for the race as he’s always better fresh, We thought about it (running again) after the Hennessy, but we soon concluded we wanted to save him so we are gearing him up for Cheltenham.  His training regime is being geared precisely for that.  We haven’t got anything like a racecourse gallop planned at the moment. It’s a thought and it’s something we have discussed, but Nick has got his own way of getting a horse ready.

He’s building up to the race and we’re keeping our fingers crossed.  I was at Kempton for the King George and thought Long Run was fantastic. He jumped well and was a worthy winner, though we understand Kauto Star wasn’t quite right.  It’s going to be a very competitive Gold Cup with lots of interesting horses in there. The betting recognises the chances of each horse and we go there with a chance as good as anybody.”

Diamond Harry Wins Hennessy Gold Cup

Nick Williams’ gelding travelled supremely well under Daryl Jacobs and fought hard to repel the late challenge of Burton Port who is now a 12/1 shot (from 25/1) for Cheltenham. Denman couldn’t manage to concede two stone to his rivals but still put up an admirable effort in third and remains 10/1 to win his second Gold Cup.

‘Diamond Harry’s Hennessy performance puts him bang in the reckoning for this season’s Gold Cup though Denman’s connections will be delighted with his run and will fancy their chances of taking on the winner at level weights,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Earlier on the card, Peddlers Cross continued his rise up the hurdling ranks with a smooth victory in the rearranged Fighting Fifth and is now a 6/1 shot (from 12/1) with totesport for the Champion Hurdle. Diamond Harry Needs To Brush Up Jumping for RSA says Williams

Nick Williams admits Diamond Harry has “no chance” in next month’s RSA Chase if he does not improve on his recent display of jumping at Newbury. The seven-year-old was a hugely impressive winner on his chasing debut at Haydock in January and although he followed up in a three-horse race at Newbury, Williams was not happy with his fencing.

“I wasn’t impressed and I think he’s got no chance in the RSA Chase if he doesn’t jump better than that,” said Williams. He didn’t jump straight at half the jumps and that won’t do at Cheltenham. He jumped fairly straight at Haydock and certainly in his schooling at home there has been no inclination to jump left or right, so I was a bit surprised at Newbury. There really isn’t much more I can do and I just have to hope it comes right on the day.”

Williams has also voiced concerns about Diamond Harry‘s stamina should the extended three-mile contest turn into a real slog.

“I don’t think his stamina is bottomless and that race brings it out, so he could possibly be found wanting on stamina depending on how testing the ground is,” the trainer told At The Races. He’s not slow and in a way you’d think that two and a half miles was a better trip for him than three.”

Diamond Harry Drifts Despite Newbury Win.

Diamond Harry maintained his unbeaten record over fences with a workmanlike victory in the three-mile toteplacepot Novices’ Chase at Newbury. Sent off the 4-6 favourite, Nick Williams’ charge is one of the leading fancies for the RSA Chase but he will have to brush up on his jumping after a merely adequate round.

Diamond Harry and Zaynar Cut for Cheltenham 2010

Diamond Harry put up a terrific performance to take the Timeform Betfair Racing Club ‘Fixed Brush’ Handicap Hurdle at Haydock under the steadier of 11st 12lb.

Timmy Murphy again elected to race wide and his mount always travelled with immense purpose. Still under a tight rein at the last, the Nick Williams-trained six-year-old cruised home by two and a half lengths from 3-1 favourite Burton Port at the rather rewarding odds of 9-2.

Stan James cut the impressive Diamond Harry from 14/1 to 8/1 for the World Hurdle and to 10/1 (from 14s) for the RSA Chase after a cracking weight-carrying performance at Haydock Park in the valuable 3m Handicap Hurdle.

Head of PR Charlie McCann:”Diamond Harry was only winnng off a mark of 149 but the manner of his win suggested he is a real threat to Big Bucks if connections decide to stay over timber. With Punchestowns due to make his chase debut at Newbury this week the RSA Chase could also be a very hot heat and trainer Nick Williams has a very difficult decision to make.”

Zaynar has been cut from 12/1 to 6/1 for the Champion Hurdle with Stan James.

Zaynar made an impressive return to action as he strolled home in the Coral Ascot Hurdle.

Off the track since winning the Triumph Hurdle in March, Nicky Henderson’s charge was sent off the 9-4 joint favourite in the hands of Andrew Tinkler, who was riding the four-year-old for the first time.

He barely had a moment of worry, sitting in behind early pacesetter Lough Derg before kicking on to take it up two flights from home.
