Dunguib Will Run In Supreme

The latest acceptors for the Grade 1 novice events and the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival have been unveiled. The tapes go up with the Spinal Research Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and a total of 66 horses remain engaged in the £100,000 contest, headed by Dunguib.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Very Impressive Dunguib

Last year’s Weatherbys Champion Bumper hero has been perfect over hurdles so far in his career and looks sure to start one of the hottest favourites at the Festival. Rite Of Passage, trained by Dermot Weld and third to Dunguib at the Cheltenham Festival last year, has the £100,000 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle over two miles and five furlongs as his principal target.

The six-year-old is one of 69 acceptors for that event with Get Me Out Of Here another leading player, following his convincing defeat of seasoned handicappers in the totesport Trophy at Newbury. The championship contest for four-year-old hurdlers is the £100,000 JCB Triumph Hurdle on Friday March 19 for which 51 contenders go forward.

Among the market leaders are Edward O’Grady’s recent impressive Grade Two scorer Alaivan and Carlito Brigante, trained by Gordon Elliott. Also taking place on Friday, March 19 is the three-mile £100,000 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. Among the 61 acceptors for this event are Najaf and Tell Massini, a winner twice at Cheltenham already this season.

In the chase division, there are 36 entries remaining in the £150,000 Irish Independent Arkle Trophy over two miles on Tuesday, March 16. They include Feltham Novices’ Chase victor Long Run and leading Irish duo Captain Cee Bee, who won the 2008 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Sizing Europe. Long Run’s trainer, Nicky Henderson, has made no secret that the five-year-old’s much more likely target is the £150,000 RSA Chase on Wednesday March 17.

A total of 34 horses remain engaged in this event with Henderson also responsible for Burton Port and Punchestowns. Also taking place on Wednesday, March 17 is the £75,000 National Hunt Chase, for which there are 52 horses going forward.

Dunguib Goes Odds On for Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham

The racing world may soon be running out of superlatives for Dunguib (30-100 favourite) after Philip Fenton’s star won the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown without coming off the bridle.

Dunguib is 4/5 from Evens with Stan James for the Supreme Novices’ after his brilliant performance in the Grade 1 Novice at Leopardstown.

Other reaction…

William Hill are now 4-5 from 10-11 about Dunguib’s chances in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle after the seven-year-old turned-in a bloodless victory in the Grade One Deloitte Novices’ Hurdle.

Not since Golden Cygnet’s victory in 1978 has a favourite started odds-on for the Grade One Cheltenham opener, when Edward O’Grady’s ill-fated hurdler annihilated the field with a 15-length victory.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Dunguib is surely the number one Cheltenham banker for punters after another commanding performance today. His hurdling still lacks fluency at times, but his engine is unrivalled and whilst the comparisons with Golden Cygnet are flattering, they appear fully justified.’’

DUNGUIB THRIVING AHEAD OF SUNDAY RUN

Trainer Philip Fenton is quietly confident ahead of Supreme Novices’ favourite Dunguib’s upcoming run in Sunday’s Grade 1 Deloitte Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Picture
Dunguib – in good form.

The seven-year old has been touted for the Cheltenham Festival’s opening contest since last year’s Champion Bumper triumph, and with three comfortable victories over timber under his belt, is a solid 5/4 to give punters a perfect start to the Festival on March 16.

“We’d like to think that he’s good enough to win on Sunday, and he’s as well as we can have him,” Fenton told sportinglife.com. He’s certainly not overtrained for Sunday, I assure you that, and then we can go straight from Sunday to Cheltenham.”

“The ground at Leopardstown will be as nice as he’s had it all year; it should be lovely ground. Dunguib is fresh, well, and ready to roll.”

Fenton has focused much of Dunguib’s work on his hurdling, which he feels is progressing nicely, but is fully aware that his charge is not yet the finished article.

“He’ll certainly have a school before he runs on Sunday and it’s fair to say he’s probably open to improvement.”

The Glenbower team display meticulous preparation when it comes to laying out Dunguib’s Festival preparations, and it is clear that they will not exert their star novice more than is necessary.

“I’m sure he’ll have a couple of easy days after the race, he has plenty of time on his side and he doesn’t take a huge amount of work. For that reason we’ll gradually wind him up towards the last three weeks before Cheltenham.”

Of course, a comfortable win at Leopardstown would automatically trigger calls for Dunguib to contest an already wide-open Champion Hurdle – but Fenton was keen to emphasise the quality of the field Dunguib would face.

“I’d say the Champion Hurdle is still very much at the back of my mind. We said we’d better cover all options and have him entered.

“With the way Solwhit won at Leopardstown, and of course with Go Native, the obvious route to take would be the Supreme Novices’.”

It appears that amongst all the hype, Fenton and his team are in unhurried and methodical mood, while all the time appreciating the brilliant performer they hold in their ranks.

Champion Hurdle, Latest Prices

Following today’s unveiling of the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle entries, the most notable absentee appears to be Mikael Dhaguenet, who was a 16-1 chance with Paddy Power.

Binocular In Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham

Rock Noir is an intriguing entry from Jonjo O’Neill, having won his last five starts at Auteuil for Marcel Rolland last year. On his last outing, the Mansonnien geldng mastered Jumbo Rio by half a length in the Grade One Prix Renaud du Vivier in November. Rock Noir has been installed into Paddy’s betting at 25-1 for the Champion, while J P McManus’s other contender Binocular is a 15-2 chance with the galaxy’s friendliest bookmaker.

Irish trainers are responsible for 21 of the 34 entries for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.

Heading the challenge from across the Irish Sea is the Noel Meade-trained Go Native, who is seeking a second win at The Festival having triumphed in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last season.

The seven-year-old has already plundered two of Britain’s top hurdling prizes this season, following up a comfortable victory in the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle in November with a hard-fought success over Starluck in the Grade One Christmas Hurdle at Kempton the following month.

Solwhit was third behind Go Native at Newcastle but the Charles Byrnes-trained six-year-old recorded a third Grade One victory when defeating the 2007 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle victor Sublimity in the Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle.

Dunguib Gets Champion Hurdle Entry

Brilliant novice Dunguib has been given a precautionary entry in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Dunguib Champion Bumper Winner

Although trainer Philip Fenton insists the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is still the planned objective for his stable star, he feels it best to have the Champion as an option. He is likely to be seen next in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on February 7 and is 5-4 favourite for the Supreme Novices’ with Paddy Power.

Following the news that Dunguib will be among the entries for the Champion Hurdle, announced on Wednesday, the Irish bookmaker quotes Fenton’s charge as 4-1 favourite with a run, ahead of such established stars at Zaynar, Solwhit, Go Native and title-holder Punjabi.

“He’s had an entry in the Champion Hurdle and we will take it step by step,” said Fenton. We will see how Leopardstown goes, but the Supreme is without doubt the main objective. But as a precaution he’s in the Champion and we will decide closer to the day and see what happens in the meantime.

The County Tipperary trainer is to give Dunguib some much needed exercise tomorrow.

Dunguib will go some place tomorrow away from home for some work,” he went on. He doesn’t take a huge amount of work and it will be a half-speed, but obviously a bit more than at home. He missed a bit of work over the three weeks of Christmas but he’s been ticking over and I think that he’s on track for the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on February 7. There is the paddypower.com Johnstown Novice Hurdle at Naas on February 21 if we need it if it so happens that he doesn’t make Leopardstown.”

William Hill have cut the odds of Dunguib’s Champion Hurdle hopes with the news that the seven-year-old has been entered for the Championship at the Cheltenham Festival.

Hills now make Dunguib a 12-1 chance (from 16-1) for the Champion Hurdle, ranking him alongside recent Williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle runner-up Starluck. Philip Fenton’s charge remains at the head of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting as 5-4 favourite, where 8-1 chance Menorah counts as his nearest rival.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’The Champion Hurdle is already looking like one of the hottest renewals for decades, but the inclusion of Dunguib would make it a battle of epic proportions.’’

Dunguib is 6/4 from 9/4 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Dunguib (30-100 favourite) maintained his unbeaten record over timber in effortless style when winning the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse. Philip Fenton’s pride and joy landed last season’s Cheltenham bumper by a wide margin and looks like being every inch as good over timber.

Dunguib is 6/4 from 9/4 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle with Stan James after another effortless success in the Grade 1 Royal Bond this afternoon. The Novice is also 10s from 16s for the Champion Hurdle given connections appear to be toying with the idea of going for the Big One.

Totesport were more impressed and have him at 8-1 (from 14s) behind 4-1 favourite Punchestowns and 11-2 chance Mikael D’Haguenet, who beat Pandorama over hurdles last season. Festival Hopefuls Win on Saturday

Triumph Hurdle….
Picture

Nick Williams has another bright young prospect in Pistolet Noir, who stayed on best of all in the Prestbury Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

An inexperienced French-bred running against mostly more worldly-wise opponents, the 7-2 shot travelled like a dream for Daryl Jacob just off the 5-4 favourite Barizan.

Pistolet Noir was in charge by the final flight and although he drifted across the track, he had nine lengths in hand by the line.

Williams was not present but his wife Jane said:

“It was only his second run – he ran very green at Chepstow but he came on for it. It was tough to take on Flat-bred horses but because he’s jumps bred, he went on the ground. He’s only tiny but he has a hell of a stride on him.”

Boylesports and William Hill were biggest about his Triumph Hurdle price, offering 25-1.

Dunguib..

This afternoon’s meeting at Punchestown has been given the go-ahead.

Course officials delivered the pleasing news following an 8am inspection.

Although the track was hit by 12 millimetres of overnight rain, the ground remains heavy.

Cliff Noone, Irish Turf Club press officer, reported: “It’s testing ground, but they have not had as much rain as was expected.”

Punchestown are also due to be in action on Sunday. Fenton said:

“That was grand. He wasn’t really concentrating over the first two and he learned more today. He jumped with enthusiasm. We’ll find out more two weeks tomorrow in the Royal Bond. The ground out there was loose rather than tacky which was okay. Roll on Fairyhouse.”

Dungib Still 5/2

Stan James left Sweeps Hill unchanged at 16/1 for the Supreme Novices’ hurdle (20/1 for the Ballymore) at the Cheltenham Festival after the Tony McCoy ridden five-year-old manitained his unbeaten record when landing today’s Punchestown opener.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: “The race turned into a four-furlong sprint and was a most unsatisfactory event, but Sweeps Hill did well to come again having been headed after the last. Runner up Some Present was left unchanged at 20/1 for the Supreme Novice and 16/1 for the Ballymore and the latter looks his more likely target although it would be foolish to read too much into a race run at a canter for the most part.”
