Fall does little to diminish Grumeti’s Cheltenham Festival claims

• Triumph Hurdle fancy well clear when slipping up two out
• Paul Nicholls reports Kauto Star in great form at home

Defeat, but no disaster. Grumeti somehow managed to enhance his Cheltenham Festival credentials despite failing to finish in a thrilling juvenile hurdle here on Wednesday.

Left in front after outsider Circus Star refused to jump the second flight, the Alan King-trained Grumeti cruised through most of the contest and was in the process of pulling clear for an effortless success when he stumbled on landing after the second-last hurdle and crashed to the turf.

That left Art History clear in front but he started to tire badly under Jack Quinlan, and the 40-1 chance Crafty Roberto, trained by Quinlan's father, Noel, sailed past in the final strides for a shock success met with dumbfounded silence by racegoers. The frustration of Grumeti's owner, Max McNeill, was all too evident as he paced the grass in the winner's enclosure, before calming down once the horse walked back to the unsaddling area seemingly unharmed.

"I'm gutted – I can't believe it's happened again," he said. "Olofi was going to win here at the last meeting until he came down at the same hurdle. We've had some awful luck.

"I know I need to look on the bright side though. He had them all working hard and we think we've got a good horse. We were going to just have one more run before Cheltenham but we might have two now, although I'll need to talk to Alan."

Despite the defeat, the bookmakers Coral promoted Grumeti to clear favouritism at 7-1 for the Triumph Hurdle, but other firms left him unchanged at 12-1.

It is inarguable that he would have won without the fall and Art History and Sud Pacifique, both high-class performers on the Flat, were left struggling behind him from the home turn. Neither showed anything like the aptitude for hurdling as Grumeti – his unfortunate fall aside – and that will stand him in good stead in the Triumph, even if niggling doubts remain as to the worth of his form so far.

Paul Nicholls, back from a break in Barbados to saddle Cedre Bleu to win the novice chase, revealed that he had found it easier to switch off since Christmas than his stable No1 Kauto Star.

"He was supposed to be just trotting last week, but when I rang Clifford [Baker, Nicholls' head lad] he said he was so bloody fresh that he'd been cantering and in fact he's been cantering every day," said the trainer.

"He's just astounding. For whatever reason, last season his races were really taking it out of him but this season he is just as fresh as he's ever been. His coat is gleaming and he's full of enthusiasm."

Meanwhile, the lure of the Cheltenham Festival continues to break new boundaries after Vulcanite, the only jumper in training owned by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, effortlessly broke his duck against moderate rivals at Southwell.

"He had to go and win like that if he has any pretensions for Cheltenham," said his trainer, Charlie Longsdon. Cheltenham is the reason Sheikh Fahad has sent this horse jumping. The whole plan is to go to Cheltenham. If he's not good enough, he'll be running at Meydan on the Flat.

"We'll look at a decent race somewhere in February as another stepping-stone and fingers crossed he'll be going for the Supreme Novice Hurdle."

Robert Winston's appeal against a 22-day ban received for breaching the whip rules will be heard by the British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary panel on Thursday morning.

The panel will also consider a positive urine sample for alcohol provided by jockey Ahmed Ajtebi at a meeting at Beverley last September. The hearing into the UAE-born rider's offence will take place in his absence, with Ajtebi currently riding in Dubai for his boss, Sheikh Mohammed.

Paul Nicholls full of pride in Cheltenham heroes Denman and Kauto Star

• Retirement not on agenda for brave pair
• Trainer also sent out What A Friend in fourth

If this was the final flourish, the memory will always be magnificent. Kauto Star and Denman offered no hint of their age as they duelled on the final circuit in the Gold Cup and finished well ahead of most of their younger opponents.

In the end, though, their contribution to the great 2011 Gold Cup spectacle was that of an honour guard that eventually gave way to a new champion, and the question now is how many more times they will return to the fray. For all concerned with the horses, there was a huge sense of pride in their performance afterwards.

"I wasn't expecting very much today but you have to hand it to them, that was an awesome horse race," Paul Nicholls, right, who trains both horses, said. "The best horse on the day won and these three [his third contender, What A Friend, was fourth] have run amazing races. It's just unbelievable.

"Both Kauto Star and Denman are 11 now and Kauto has just lost that little kick coming off the bend but we were committed. All of those people who said he should be retired can eat their words now. We didn't win it but we weren't expecting to. We thought they'd run well and they have done. We were just beaten by a younger set of legs but all credit to the horses to come back and run so well. We wouldn't have run them if we didn't think they could give a good account of themselves and I'm mighty proud of them."

This was Denman's sixth consecutive run at the Festival. He finished second in a novice hurdle in 2006, won the RSA Chase the following year and then the Gold Cup before finishing runner-up in the same race three years running.

"That was lovely," Paul Barber, his owner, said. "I have a dry throat, a dry mouth. He ran another great race but was just beaten by a younger horse. That's six visits here and he's never been out of the first two. He heard that cheer when he came in and he thought it was for him. Mind you, he got almost as loud a cheer as the winner."

Clive Smith, the owner of Kauto Star, was equally delighted with the performance of his long-time favourite, who was also having his sixth start at the meeting.

"What a run," Smith said. "Ruby [Walsh] was able to dictate the pace and he had every chance coming around the turn. He's 11 now but that was still a wonderful performance and I'm so proud of him."

There was no immediate indication of whether either horse will run again this season or indeed at all. There are major meetings at both Aintree and Punchestown on the horizon but both horses have suffered upset defeats at the Liverpool track in the past while Denman looked horribly ill at ease on Punchestown's right-handed circuit last April.

Both are clearly still close to the top of the chasing pyramid but whether either will ever again have the necessary speed to win a race as competitive as the Gold Cup is another matter. Eleven-year-olds have a poor record in the race as it is but in the modern era 12-year-old winners are almost unheard of. Unless fate, in the shape of a fall for the favourite, intervenes, another 12 months is unlikely to bring much improvement in their prospects.

Few bookmakers were willing to put a price against either for next year's Gold Cup yesterday, though Kauto Star in particular may well be aimed at one more run in the King George VI Chase, in which he was beaten this year by Long Run.

Whatever decision is made about their futures, it seems inevitable that both horses will return to Cheltenham on Gold Cup day at some stage. Whether that is for the race itself or the parade of great champions beforehand is another matter.

Kauto cut for Gold Cup as punters begin to overlook King George flop

Kauto Star has been cut to 8/1 (from 10/1) by the sponsors for the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup as punters begin to overlook his disappointing run in the King George VI Chase last weekend.

Kauto Star

Paul Nicholls’ revelation that the horse has been suffering from a ‘low grade infection’ has seen support for the two-time Gold Cup winner as he aims to bounce back to make it a hat-trick in the Cheltenham showpiece. As a result of this support, Imperial Commander has eased at the head of the market to 7/2 (from 3/1).

“Kauto Star’s King George performance has polarised opinion but punters clearly thought the 10/1 represented value as he’s been well-supported for the Gold Cup since he was found to be suffering from an infection,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Master Minded will face eight rivals in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot for which he is the 4/7 favourite with totesport. Somersby is next in the market at 8/1 and also heads the market without the favourite at 7/2.

King Fontaine and Maktu have been installed as the 11/2 joint-favourites for the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on Saturday by totesport with Becauseicouldntsee and Buffalo Bob both at 13/2.

The Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Chase and the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle are the highlights of a cracking card at Leopardstown on Sunday and Quel Esprit and Realt Dubh head totesport’s market for the former at 10/3 whilst Hurricane Fly is the 1/2 favourite to win his fourth Grade 1 hurdle on the bounce.

Kauto Star Gets Season Under-way at Down Royal

Kauto Star remains unchanged at 7/4 with totesport for the William Hill King George VI Chase after recapturing the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal, a race he last won in 2008 en route to Cheltenham glory.

Kauto Star

King George next for Kauto Star

The two-time Gold Cup winner travelled comfortably throughout most of the contest but had to pull out plenty up the home straight, eventually scoring by four lengths from last year’s Arkle victor Sizing Europe. Henry de Bromhead’s charge stepped up plenty from his first run of the season and has been chalked up at 20/1 for Gold Cup glory next March.

‘Although Kauto Star didn’t show all his customary sparkle today, Kempton is the target and we would not be surprised if he put up another five-star performance to land an unprecedented fifth King George on Boxing Day’ said totesport spokesman Andrew Griffiths.

The following race provided Paul Nicholls with a quick-fire double as The Nightingale landed the Ladbrokes.com Chase with ease. Prior to the race his trainer stated the horse is unlikely to be campaigned on left hand courses so has been given a cautious 25/1 quote for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Back on home turf, the champion trainer looks to have another promising horse on his hands as Dolatulo handed out a 23-length beating to his rivals in the Blue Square Exclusive Live Shows Juvenile Hurdle at Sandown. The three-year old never came off the bridle and is the new 14/1 favourite (from 33/1) for the JCB Triumph Hurdle with the Wigan-based firm.

Nicholls Favours Kauto Star in Denman Showdown

Paul Nicholls has labelled Kauto Star “lethal” as Clive Smith’s 10-year-old bids to cement his place among the National Hunt legends in Friday’s totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Kauto Star Gold Cup Favourite

Only Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Mill House and Best Mate have ever won the blue riband event three times, and all did it in consecutive seasons.

Kauto Star has already created his own unique piece of history by becoming the first horse to reclaim the prize 12 months ago, and another win for Ruby Walsh’s mount would add yet more lustre to his legacy. Having been kept fresh since winning a fourth King George VI Chase in spectacular fashion, champion trainer Nicholls is feeling bullish again.

“It is impossible to say he is better than ever as it was such a wonderful performance at Kempton,” said Nicholls.

“He worked with Master Minded last weekend and there are very few who can do what he did with a champion chaser.

“When he is fit he is lethal and there is nothing I can say to put anyone off him.”

According to the bookmakers, Kauto Star has most to fear from stablemate and 2008 winner Denman, who finished second 12 months ago after an interrupted preparation.

Yet again Denman’s last appearance before Cheltenham did not go to plan as he left his new jockey, Tony McCoy, on the floor in the Aon Chase which was won by another stablemate, Tricky Trickster.

McCoy is back in the saddle and the racing world is itching to see the two best horses and the two best jockeys competing in the highlight of the season.

“Denman did a very good piece of work with Tricky Trickster at the weekend. The more you do and the more you drill him the better he gets,” added Nicholls.

“You have to remember that before he ran in the Aon he gave 22lb to What A Friend and he went on to win the Lexus.

“He did have a little setback, but he is over that and do not write him off.

“The danger with Denman is that you go off too quick on him and get to the bottom of him too soon.

“He loves a battle and if he had got into a scrap with Niche Market at Newbury he would have loved it.”

One of the few viable alternatives to the big two is last year’s Ryanair winner, Imperial Commander.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ nine-year-old only went down by a nose to Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November, and returns to a course where he has won four times over fences after disappointing in Kempton’s King George VI Chase.

“He’s in really good nick and I’m very happy with him. He got within a whisker of beating Kauto Star at Haydock. I couldn’t be happier and I’m really looking forward to it,” the Naunton handler said.

“He certainly will have improved from Haydock. That was his first run of the season and he’s a big burly horse. He’s an awful lot fitter now and he’s really lean and mean and keen.

“The trip is not a problem, he stays forever.

“We’ll be riding our own race but we certainly will be up there with them. Three out at Haydock he had Kauto beat but he made a mistake there that turned the whole thing into a battle.

“He has a high cruising speed and can quicken off that. I don’t think we’re worried about tactics at all.

“He’s won four out of five over fences at Cheltenham. He was very wrong the only time he was beaten there. He damaged a hock and didn’t run for nearly a year.

“Otherwise without that he’d have been unbeaten there.”

Willie Mullins is pinning his hopes on Cooldine improving as much as he did last year.

His novice campaign was highlighted with an authoritative victory in the RSA Chase and he ran a sound trial in the Irish Hennessy on his latest start.

“He seems in good form on the gallops here during the week,” said Mullins.

“Last year he improved hand over fist from race to race and I’m sure he’s improved again since Leopardstown.

“I hope we can get into the money and it is all to play for after that. The race looks like a head-to-head and my fellow needs a good bit of improvement to get between the two of them but that is what we are here to find out.

“He will handle the ground and the trip will bring out his stamina.

“He put in a fantastic round of jumping last year and if he can do the same again this time it will put him right in the race.

Friday: 3:20 Cheltenham; Cheltenham Gold Cup (grade 1)

3:20 Cheltenham; Cheltenham Gold Cup (grade 1)

The big one. Kauto Star v Denman. The 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Of course Kauto Star will win a third Gold Cup if he prevails here, but we saw Master Minded fail and now all eyes are on Kauto Star.

I think regular readers of the website will know by now that this is a big one and that I am 100 per cent behind Kauto Star. There is no doubt that Kauto Star has the tallent and the class to win. So does Denman. Is he value, NO!

But it is about more than value. The win at Kempton in the King George was simply sensational. Any horse that can do that gets my vote. The weather has held off and I think that the ground will be perfect of Kauto Star. That for me was the only doubt. I think Denman will be second and I think Tricky Trickster will be third. Cooldine is the only one I see possibly breaking the Nicholls hold on the race.

Cheltenham Gold Cup: The Decider is only Days Away!

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is now only days away, who will win?

Arch rivals and stablemates Kauto Star and Denman head a field of 12 left in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday at the confirmation stage.

Kauto Star became the first horse to regain the blue riband prize when beating his fellow Paul Nicholls inmate 12 months ago.

Next week he bids to join the likes of Arkle and Best Mate as triple Gold Cup winners.

Tricky Trickster and My Will complete a four-strong Nicholls team while there will be plenty of support for Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Imperial Commander, who was only beaten a nose by Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase at Haydock earlier in the season.
