Nicky Henderson in bullish mood on run up to Cheltenham Festival

Nicky Henderson in bullish mood on run up to Cheltenham Festival- in an excellent article in the Daily Telegraph he tells of his thoughts ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.

Cheltenham Festival Tips

Zaynar out to 6/1 with Stan James

For there is nobody better at serving up his Cheltenham offerings perfectly prepared, and while some might occasionally be a fraction underdone, you’ll never see them overcooked.

Hence, those ‘layers’ of Zaynar (at 8-1 generally) are taking the type of risks normally associated with an outbreak of salmonella. On Sunday, those dangers were underlined when Henderson, the first to train 100 winners this season, declared Zaynar to be “fine” after his recent Kelso excursion.

Zaynar, sent off a 1-14 favourite, had been beaten one length by the lumbering giant Quwetwo on Thursday, and while there must have been immediate concern that such a race on heavy ground might set him back, Henderson allayed those fears with an upbeat report.

“It was horrific ground, and he was not as straight as I wanted, but he has come through the race fine. He was racing alongside ‘a tank,’ who was ploughing through it. In fact, an extraordinary picture in the Racing Post shows Zaynar fetlock deep in that mud,” he said.

Henderson is clearly delighted he ran last year’s Triumph Hurdle winner for fitness reasons, as he now has every chance of getting him to post spot on for the Champion Hurdle, which the trainer may well end up dominating, even in the absence of the much-discussed Binocular, who has gone wrong.

The other piece of good news for Henderson is that Kempton Park are to add an eighth race on Saturday, which will be a replica of Wincanton’s abandoned Kingwell Hurdle in all but name. This will give him the opportunity to run Punjabi, the defending champion, who is still ridiculously long for the Champion Hurdle, at 11-1.

“I know it’s getting tight before Cheltenham, but I’d rather see him have the race than not have the race,” the trainer told me. Weather will remain a constant worry for all trainers with an eye on the Festival, and as Henderson reiterated: “The forecast is not good.”

Meanwhile, trainer Philip Hobbs reported all his high-profile runners from Saturday have come back in good order despite their disappointments. Dream Alliance, pulled up when toiling in Haydock Park’s Blue Square Gold Cup, is OK. “Unfortunately, he can be inconsistent, and can turn in a race like that,” Hobbs said.

Planet Of Sound has come back with a bruise to his left eye, but is otherwise fine following his fifth-fence fall in the Betfair Ascot Chase, and Menorah, overturned by Lush Life in a novices’ hurdle, will probably benefit from a truly-run Spinal Research Supreme Novices Hurdle.

Best finish of the day at Ascot featured amateur Josh Moore getting back up on Panjo Bere to beat Ruby Walsh on I’msingingtheblues in the Trisoft Handicap Chase. Moore is likely to cherish the picture of the finish for years to come. No doubt, he will also remember the Walsh pat on the back after crossing the line.

Pass The Port? Burton Port Remains Unchanged for RSA Chase.

Burton Port gave doubles to Nicky Henderson and Barry Geraghty when landing the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Chase at Ascot.

Picture

Previously unbeaten over fences, the 4-6 favourite came under a little bit of pressure turning into the home straight, and for a few strides it looked as though long-time leader Diablo might not stop in front.

Stan James left Burton Port unchanged for the RSA Chase at 20/1 but cut Fairyhouse winner Alaivan from 10s to 7s for the Triumph after his smooth victory in their Grade 2 Hurdle.

Long Run Confirmed RSA Runner

Owner Robert Waley-Cohen has confirmed the RSA Chase is the intended target for Long Run following his impressive display at Warwick on Saturday.

The French import was a brilliant winner of the Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day but dropped back from three miles to two miles in Saturday’s Kingmaker Novices’ Chase.

The descent in distance did not change the result as he again proved far too good for his rivals. But providing conditions are not heavy, Nicky Henderson’s five-year-old will step back up in trip for the RSA Chase, rather than line up in the Arkle Trophy.

Picture

“I was extremely happy with him and he is just a class horse,” said Waley-Cohen. This is no disrespect to the other horses, but he was just a cut above on the day and we couldn’t have asked any more of him. He made one or two slight jumping errors but they were extremely minor. He’s come out of the race absolutely fine and we are now looking forward to Cheltenham. We all slept on it on Saturday night and we’ve decided we’re going to go for the RSA Chase. Things might change if the ground becomes very testing but if the ground is like Simon Claisse (clerk of the course) brilliantly produces it – the usual good to soft ground or just on the softer side – he’ll go for the RSA.”

Long Run Cut For RSA Chase

Long Run (4-7 favourite) ran out an easy winner of the totesport.com Kingmaker Novices’ Chase at Warwick. Long Run impressed when winning at Warwick earlier today, despite being continually carried right at his fences by the errant King Edmund, and was cut from 5s to 4s by Stan James.

Diamond Harry Drifts Despite Newbury Win.

Diamond Harry maintained his unbeaten record over fences with a workmanlike victory in the three-mile toteplacepot Novices’ Chase at Newbury. Sent off the 4-6 favourite, Nick Williams’ charge is one of the leading fancies for the RSA Chase but he will have to brush up on his jumping after a merely adequate round.

HENDERSON 20-1 TO WIN BOTH ARKLE AND RSA

HENDERSON 20-1 TO WIN BOTH ARKLE AND RSA

Somersby runs at Hereford on Sunday

Nicky Henderson has an awesome record at the Cheltenham Festival and he looks to have a major hand in both the Arkle Chase and the RSA Chase this year after today’s entries were revealed by Cheltenham. Paddy Power make the Lambourn handler a 20-1 chance to win both races.

NIcky Henderson

Henderson is a 6-4 shot with Paddy to win the RSA Chase and a 6-1 chance to land the Arkle.

Punchestowns, a very easy winner of a Grade 2 novices’ chase at Newbury in November, is 7-2 favourite for the RSA with Paddy Power, while Long Run, a 6-1 chance for the same event and 12-1 shot for the Arkle with Power, cruised away before the last before landing the Grade 1 Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton over Christmas.

Henderson said: “I don’t know where Punchestowns is going but he is ready and will run next week and the RSA is the plan along with Long Run, who has entries in the RSA and Arkle.

“I don’t know where Long Run is going to run next yet – we’re sort of in discussions.”

Henry Daly was delighted to see Mighty Man make it two out of two over fences at Huntingdon on Wednesday, when he was cut to 14-1 (from 20) by Paddy Power for the RSA, and will give his charge one more run before tackling the championship staying novices’ chase.

He said: “I just don’t know where that outing will be and I will have to go through the programme book.”

Alan King’s horses have been flying in recent weeks after a bad season by his standards, although he must have been frustrated to see Bensalem, a 20-1 shot with the galaxy’s friendliest bookie for the RSA, take a tumble when challenging three out in a Grade 2 won by Diamond Harry last weekend.

Noel Williams, King’s assistant, said: “Bensalem seems ok and he came out of the race with a sort of swollen knee. I haven’t actually seen him but I’ve not heard anything bad and Alan seems to be happy with him.

“I don’t know what the plan is now and we’ve got to wait for his knee to go down.

“If he had stood up, he would certainly have made a good race of it wouldn’t he? He was going well enough to certainly lay down a good challenge on the winner. We’re certainly not giving up on him and we know that he is a very nice horse. It was just one of those things and thank God that he’s ok.”

Paddy Power himself said: “Our market has the RSA Chase down as a Nicky Henderson benefit but it looks like being a truly competitive race after Diamond Harry threw down his credentials last weekend. Mind you, tell me a race at Cheltenham that isn’t truly competitive and I might buy a wee share in a horse being aimed at it!”

Meanwhile Hereford will be graced by the presence of unbeaten chaser Somersby, who is 7-1 with Paddy Power for the Arkle, on Sunday with the multiple champion jockey in the saddle.

Trainer Henrietta Knight said: “I think that he’s running on Sunday at Hereford. He always goes very well at home. I chose Hereford to get a run into him before Cheltenham but also to get AP McCoy because he can go there.”

Riverside Theatre and Mad Max, trained by Henderson and who have both graced Kempton with victories in the last two months, also feature towards the top of Power’s betting for the Arkle and are 12-1 and 16-1 respectively.

Henderson said: “All is going well with Riverside Theatre at home and he’s not going to run again before the Arkle. I think that he wants to be very fresh.

Mad Max is also in the Arkle and he’ll have another run obviously but where I don’t know at the moment.”

Captain Cee Bee head’s Power’s market at 4-1, while Osana, trained by Edward O’Grady, is a 14-1 chance and the most notable absentee would appear to be Zaarito, who was a 16-1 shot.

Mighty Man Heads for RSA Chase

Mighty Man maintained his unbeaten record over fences with a smooth success in the Huntingdon Novices’ Chase on Wednesday. Henry Daly’s Grade One-winning hurdler may have made a late switch to chasing at the age of 10, but he has made a seamless transition.

Picture

Richard Johnson set out to make all and despite Sullumo ranging up alongside before the turn out of the back straight, his class kicked in and the 8-13 favourite went away to win by eight lengths. Stan James offer 16-1 about Mighty Man in the RSA Chase.

Daly said: “He has always jumped very well and it is really nice to see him do it out there. He will probably have one more run over fences and go for the RSA Chase. The ground was against him and this wasn’t the plan at all, we’d originally hoped to go to Warwick two weeks ago.”

His task was made easier when Bensalem fell at the third-last when the two were vying for the lead, but the 8-11 shot got over that obstacle safely and bounded clear.

Barry Geraghty, riding the Nick Williams-trained gelding for the first time, was able to take more time with Diamond Harry over the last two two fences to win by 16 lengths from Knockara Beau, who was hampered when Bensalem crashed out.

Geraghty, standing in for regular pilot Timmy Murphy who was required to ride at Ascot, said: “He was very good. Just for one second he was a bit flat footed but he jumped brilliantly in the straight.

“It’s good to school the opposition!”

Punchestowns Will Go For RSA Chase

Nicky Henderson hopes to give Punchestowns two more runs over fences before the RSA Chase at Cheltenham.

Picture

Last year’s Ladbrokes World Hurdle runner-up made an impressive start over fences at Newbury in November but the weather has hit his recent programme.

“He would have gone to Cheltenham (New Year’s Day) and Warwick on Saturday and he does need a couple of runs before the Festival but there is time to do that,” the trainer told Racing UK. He did everything beautifully at Newbury, it was a very pleasing debut. Barry (Geraghty) was very good on him, spending the first half of the race getting into a rhythm and gaining some confidence. As that built up he started to let him open up and enjoy himself.”

Henderson believes the RSA is the only logical target for his star at Cheltenham.

“He’ll probably have the one entry in the RSA chase – I can’t see there’s anything else to put him in. I can’t think he needs to be in the Ryanair taking on those horses. He might as well run against novices.”

At 4/1 this is a great bet, get on now, Back or Lay with Betfair…

Nicky Henderson admits Long Run is more likely to run in the RSA Chase than the Irish Independent Arkle at Cheltenham.

The much-vaunted French import was a hugely impressive winner of the Feltham Novices’ Chase over three miles at Kempton on Boxing Day.

However connections have since pondered whether to drop him back to the minimum trip at Cheltenham in March.

Stablemate Punchestowns is an intended runner in the RSA Chase but there is no thought of trying to keep the pair apart.

“We’re not going to switch them around to try and avoid each other as Cheltenham is Cheltenham and every owner is entitled to be there as much as the other,” Henderson told Racing UK.

“He is only a five-year-old, has done an enormous amount already and you’d like to think in one or two years’ time, Long Run might be able to have a crack at Kauto Star.

“I’ve no doubt that his optimum trip is going to be further than two miles, but does it need to be three (miles)?

“We had a good session with Yogi Breisner in the indoor school the other day and his jumping was very, very good. I was really pleased and thought his technique had improved. We will be doing that again,”

“We also feel that if he goes jumping at a quicker pace, it will be a little easier.

“The Arkle was just an idea I had and it is far from cast in stone what we’re going to do. In all probability he’ll go for the RSA.”

Long Run is 5/1 with Sky Bet for the RSA Chase.

Long Run 6-1 For RSA Chase

French import Long Run ran his rivals ragged in the williamhill.com Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

Picture

Having his first start Nicky Henderson the four-year-old, in receipt of 7lb from all of his rivals, jogged round in no more than a hack canter throughout for amateur jockey Sam Whaley-Cohen, the owner’s son.

Ruby Walsh attempted to make all on Tchico Polos but weakened quickly leaving Tazbar to chase home the impressive winner, some 14 lengths adrift of the 11-8 favourite.

Victor Chandler and Totesport cut Long Run to 6-1 from 12s for the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, while Sky Bet go 5-1 from 12s.

Henderson said: “We have got to get his English better than his French as there are still some French habits in there.

“He will learn and that is the only the only negative, as the performance itself was unbelievable.

“Sam came down and we put him through the indoor school, trying to get him to go up, up, up (at his fences) as it is a different technique to the way they jump in France.

“As for his engine, you can see that for itself and for a four-year-old he is a serious horse.”

Keith Reveley said of Tazbar: “My son James worked at (Guillaume) Macaire’s (Long Run’s former trainer) stable so we knew that Long Run was a class horse.

“This was only Tazbar’s second run over fences so I’m thrilled with him, he just wasn’t quite as good as the winner.

“He’s got to run in these kind of races, we’ll certainly look at Cheltenham although Punchestown might suit him better.”

Renee Robeson, trainer of the third, Ogee, said: “He would have preferred better ground and he’d be better left-handed but it was a satisfactory run.

“We’ll have to see how he comes out of this but Cheltenham and Aintree are possibilities.”
