Cue Card Cut for Cheltenham Festival

Stan James cut Aintree winner Cue Card to 6/1 from 10s for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and from 10/1 to 5/1 for the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at next year’s Cheltenham Festival. The firm left the horse at 33/1 for the Stan James Champion Hurdle:

Head of PR Charlie McCann: “The defeat of Dunguib last year showed it is sometimes best not to get too carrried away with wide margin novice successes, but Cue Card looked an absolute machine at Aintree and he won with his head in his chest despite pulling throughout the 2m 4f trip. Whatever race he ends up in next March he must take the beating unless connections decide to go for the Champion which seems unlikely at this stage.”

Dare Me Gets Novice Quotes

Celestial Halo’s debut over fences had a dramatic conclusion in the Best Mate Beginners’ Chase.

The former Champion Hurdle runner-up, sent off at 1-4 favourite, was travelling nicely alongside Rougham when he made a hash of the fourth-last and fell, while Rougham bizarrely fell independently at the same obstacle.

This suddenly brought Diamond Brook (9-1) and Jocheski back into proceedings from a long way back, with the former getting home in front by a head.

Celestial Halo’s jockey Ruby Walsh said: “He was jumping super before that, but he just got on top of it. It’s better he did it then than in the Arkle.”

Nicholls said: “It’s not ideal, obviously, and it’s back to the drawing board now, but plenty of horses have fallen on their debuts.

“He had jumped beautifully up to then – he just stepped at it and that was one of his traits over hurdles.

“It might be that he won’t take to fences, but he’ll have another school and we’ll have a talk with Andy (Stewart, owner) and see what we want to do.

“We could always go back to hurdles if we want to. It’s always been at the back of my mind that he is by Galileo and is Flat-bred.”

Johnson, riding Rougham, added: “The other horse had nothing to do with his fall. I’d imagine he had more left than me, but mine jumped very well before that.”

Stan James cut impressive Exeter winner Dare Me from 25s to 16/1 for both the Supreme Novices’ and Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” With Cue Card entered at Aintree at the weekend the novice division is beginning to take shape and Dare Me put down a very good mark at Exeter this afternoon and we cut the horse from 25s to 16s. He has 18l to make up on Cue Card on Festival Bumper running but he looked as if he could be a different proposition with 8 flights of hurdles to jump.”

Head of PR Charlie McCann:”After Dunguib‘s brilliant win at Leopardstown last time you couldn’t imagine that the pride of Ireland could possibly be anything other than long odds on for the Supreme Novices‘, but doubts are emerging about his relatively inexperienced pilot, his ability to jump at speed on the forecast good ground and the possibility that he might have to weave his way through a maximum field if he is dropped out. Tuesday 1.30 Supreme Novice Hurdle Preview

1:30 Cheltenham, The Supreme Novice’s Hurdle

The Irish have been backing super horse Dunguib here since he won the Champion bumper at the Cheltenham Festival last year. He didn’t just win last year he destroyed them and has remained unbeaten ever since. His last run at Leopardstown hardly troubled Dunguib but there have been questions asked about his jumping. Below is Dunguib‘s last run;

Dunguib is clearly a high class horse and is certainly the Irish Banker of the meeting but at odds on he represents little in the way of value, now. Indeed if he gets beaten then many Irish punters will be in trouble. So can Dunguib be beaten?

Firstly let me take you back to 2008 when Binocular appeared here at a similar price to Dunguib, having been unbeaten for Nicky Henderson. It was Captain Cee Bee who beat him that day as he didn’t get up the Cheltenham hill. We know that Dunguib does get up the Cheltenham Hill. Watch again his Champion Bumper win last year, below;

So we need to look at the opposition. In my view there is only one horse to possibly trouble Dunguib at that is Get Me Out Of Here. Regular readers of Racing Diary will now that we absolutely love Get Me Out Of Here. We have had it right off with him on his last three runnings and last time got a handsome 10/1 as Get Me Out Of Here won at Newbury. At the prices Get Me Out Of Here is a very solid each-way bet and certainly I will be on here. We simply don’t know how good Get Me Out of Here is, similarly the same could be said of Dunguib who might, just might be the real deal!

Supreme Novices Hurdle Betting Advice;

Dunguib Heads Supreme Novice Field

Dunguib heads 34 horses left in at the confirmation stage for the Spinal Research Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Dunguib wins Champion Bumper 2009

Last season’s Weatherbys Bumper winner, trained by Philip Fenton, is seen by many as a banker and is odds-on in the ante-post betting to get the Irish off to a flier in the opening race of the four-day feast. Fenton said:

Dunguib is grand and all has gone very smoothly, no problems thankfully. He’ll possibly jump a few flights on Thursday morning, before he heads off. We’ve taken him out of the Champion Hurdle and he goes for the Supreme. I’ve been very happy with him since Leopardstown, he’s jumped several hurdles since and he’s jumped them well.”

Paddy Power will donate £1000 to Spinal Research for every length Dunguib wins by, and Fenton added:

“If he wins half a length that will do for us, but hopefully he can do better than that for Spinal Research.”

Home contenders Get Me Out Of Here and Menorah are on target to clash with Dunguib next Tuesday. Main market rival to the Irish hotpot is totesport Trophy hero Get Me Out Of Here, owned by J P McManus and trained at Jackdaws Castle by Jonjo O’Neill.

“He came out of his last race well. His cut has healed up and he’s in good form,” said McManus’ racing manager Frank Berry of Tony McCoy’s mount. He got a bit of a gash at Newbury but he’s fine again now and Jonjo is very pleased with him. He goes there in good shape.”

Another leading fancy is Menorah, despite suffering a shock defeat at Ascot on his latest start.

“It wasn’t ideal and obviously we were thinking that he should go and win,” trainer Philip Hobbs told At The Races. But it was a little bit like when he was beaten at Doncaster in that it was a very muddling race. We were left in front and then got taken on so it was just a mess really. The horse is in good form so we’ll press on.”

Martin Pipe Says Dunguib, Kauto Star and Master Minded are Festival Bankers

Training legend Martin Pipe believes the Dunguib camp have done the right thing in sticking to the novice route at Cheltenham next week. Connections of last year’s brilliant Bumper winner have resisted calls to tackle the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle rather than the Spinal Research Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Kauto Star Gold Cup Favourite

The now-retired Pipe, twice a winner of the Champion, is in agreement with that line of thinking – and rates the seven-year-old Dunguib as the ‘banker’ of the showcase meeting. He told the Daily Mail:

“I would have done the same thing. The Irish think Dunguib is the banker and if I had to take five horses there he’d be my first choice. A fast-run race will be ideal for him.”

Pipe is also in the corner of Kauto Star landing a third totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. He added:

“The ground looks to be favouring him more than Denman and he’s simply the best. Master Minded won well last time after the injury and should win another Champion Chase.”

Pipe also gave a good word to two contenders trained by his son, David. He said:

“Notus De La Tour is near top weight in the Fred Winter and he’s only had one run for the stable. But he’s a nice young horse who will want good ground. Ashkazar has been a little disappointing but the conditions (in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle) should suit him and I’m expecting him to go a lot better.”

Dunguib No Certainty Says Charlie Brooks

In the Daily Telegraph Charlie Brooks says Dunguib is no certainly in the Supreme Novice Hurdle;

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Dunguib wins Champion Bumper 2009

The most fascinating conundrum of this year’s Cheltenham Festival is going to be answered very quickly next week. After the first race we will know whether Dunguib has lifted Ireland’s spirits and can still lay claim to being the next Istabraq.

The passionate Irish punters will have smashed into any even money the English bookmakers will have offered on the Spinal Research Supreme Novices Hurdle favourite, so someone will be licking very deep wounds.

If the evidence of the formbook is anything to go by, you would say it is the bookmakers who will take the first kicking of the meeting. The bare facts suggest that Dunguib is a bigger certainty than Gordon Brown on a bender at Bank of England’s printing press. But the formbook is wrong, as far as the outcome of this race is concerned, and this is how you figure out why.

Get your partner to stand, sideways on, in a pair of Christian Louboutin high-heeled shoes. [Please note no bigoted politically incorrect reference to wife or girlfriend here.] Then note where the balls of their toes are in relation to their ankles. Directly above them, you will find. Just as Dunguib’s ankles are vertically above his hooves.

To discover why this physical conformation is not conducive to being a top hurdler [the angle between the two should be 45 degrees], I now want you to loose school your partner around your sitting room.

Appropriate home-made obstacles for this purpose can be made using your best champagne glasses. If you do not have sufficient numbers of them to avoid a run out, intersperse them with sherry glasses. For other hurdles you could use any Ming china that you can lay your hands on, or small children. The elongated scenes of Venice, which Canaletto painted, are also ideal.

Once your ‘hurdles’ are ready, line your partner up facing in the right direction, and give them a fairly forceful whack on the bottom.

What happens next will very accurately resemble, for those of you who kept your eyes open, Dunguib trying to jump eight flights of hurdles with 19 other horses getting in his way. The financial consequences, for both you and the Irish punters, will be dire.

Dunguib is such a short price for this race because he would win it without breaking into a sweat if it was a Flat race. And although he has won the hurdle races which he has contested in Ireland this season, they have been a different proposition to the one he now faces.

At Leopardstown, last time out, he was able to scramble over the hurdles in his shambolic way, and then have time to regain his composure because it was a small field and they went a sensible pace. He will get no such breathing space at Prestbury Park. The pace of the race will be fast and furious.

Another issue for Dunguib is that he’s ridden from the back of the field. Which does not present too many problems when there are only 10 other runners in the race, but can turn into a nightmare at the back of a big field. Especially if you are not jumping fluently.

This is mission impossible for Dunguib. If you don’t believe me, ask 19 neighbours to come around after closing time, dust your partner down and set the hurdles up again.

Big Buck’s 4/5 to be the Shortest Festival Favourite

Stan James bet 4/5 that Big Buck’s will go off the shortest price of the Big 4 (Dunguib, Master Minded, Kauto Star and Big Buck’s) in this month’s Cheltenham Festival. We are also asking which of the 4 will win by the furthest? how many of the Big 4 will win? and what will happen first with Kauto Star 20/1 to win the Gold Cup……as long as the other three lose!
